Mayville
Mission

The current mission of the Detachment is to assist Company A(-) and the 142d Engineer Combat Battalion (Heavy) in providing sustainment engineering and limited survivability support to division, corps, and theater army forces. Specific mission is vertical construction , which includes carpentry, masonry, plumbing, and electrical projects. This unit is subordinate to Company A(-) located in Oakes, North Dakota.

Mayville
History

The detachment received its Federal Recognition in 1955. The detachment members met in the town fire hall until the current armory was completed in 1958. This was a joint project between the North Dakota National Guard, the State of North Dakota, and the City of Mayville. The armory was constructed as a public building to be used by the National Guard for training assemblies and by the City of Mayville for civic functions.

Over the years, Mayville has been the home to several National Guard Units. They are:

1955-1963 816th Engineer Company

1963-1968 Company B 231st Battalion

1968-1972 Company B 141st Battalion

1972-1981 191st Military Police Company

1981-1987 634th Service Company

1987-1993 Detachment 2 Co C 141st Engineer Combat Battalion

1993- Present Detachment 2 Co A 142nd Engineer Combat Battalion (Heavy)

The unit has been activated for the following Federal Active Duty:

1941-1946 Guadalcanal, Northern Solomons, Leyte, Southern Philippines

Jan2003-Apr2004 Operation Enduring / Iraqi Freedom with duty in Balad, Fallujah and Ah Ramadi.

The unit has earned the following decorations:

Presidential Unit Citation (Navy), Streamer embroidered SOLOMONS

Philippine Presidential Unit Citation, Streamer embroidered 17 October 1944- 04 July 1945

In recent years, the Detachment has provided the following Emergency Assistance to the State of North Dakota:

* Dec 1996-Apr1997, Operation Snowball, Snow removal in outlying areas, removal of dead cattle from central and western ND.
* Apr - Jun 1997, Operation Good Neighbor 1997 Flood of Red River Valley area.
* 11-14 Nov 2004, Assisted local and state law enforcement for the search of a missing couple in the Hettinger area.
* 12-13 Aug 2000, Disaster support for severe windstorm, consisting of tree/debris removal and hauling operations.
* 8-10 August 2001, Disaster support for severe windstorm, consisting of tree/debris removal and hauling operations.

Recent Community Projects completed include:

1995 - Wood construction of Dining and Billeting Facilities for the South Dakota Boy Scouts

1999 - Block warming building for Mayville Parks and Recreation skating rink

Recent Overseas Training Deployments and Annual Trainings consist of:

1996 - Block building construction of a clinic in the Republic of Panama.

1998 - Block building construction of school and clinic in the Republic of Honduras

1999 - Troop Construction support to the Eighth US Army (EUSA), Camp Humphreys, Korea, by constructing two pre-engineered buildings, removing 5 underground storage tanks, and constructing 5 containment structures.

2000 - Construction of Troop housing facilities at Camp Grafton, Devils Lake, ND.

2001 - Erection of pre-engineered steel building at Camp Rodriquez and construction of a 25 meter rifle and pistol range at Camp Jackson, Korea.

2002 - Construction of pre-engineered building for the Military Service Club at Camp Grafton, Devils Lake, ND.

2005 - Block building construction consisting of two buildings, five rooms to be utilized as a school, including plumbing and electrical - Philippines

Recent Overseas Training Deployments and Annual Trainings consist of:

2005 - Assisted in construction of 21 km road on Annette Island, Alaska, in support of Joint Task Force "Operation Alaskan Road". Soldiers cross-trained on horizontal equipment consisting of Hyex, 20 tn articulating dump trucks, loaders and compaction equipment.

2005 - Constructed two concrete block buildings and poured various concrete pads during Annual Training at Camp Ripley, Little Falls, MN.
